As I was going through my wren & martin, I came across a very nice thing and i.e the usage of older and elder.
“Older and Oldest may be said either of persons or of things, while elder and eldest apply to persons only, and are besides, strictly speaking confined to members of the same family” : is a verbatim from wren & martin.
Eg. Gladstone was older than Morley.
Patricia is the eldest of the Vicar’s family.
Old Farmer Giles the oldest Inhabitant in our village.
Also Elder only goes before noun like “elder sister”, “elder brother”. It’s never used as “Tomy is elder than me”
