Tricks to Crack the Entrance Exam

MBA is one of those courses which attract a lot of attention from students all over the world. At the same time it is also a course whose entrance exam is feared by most. Students from different backgrounds such as engineering, arts, medical, commerce, prepare for the MBA entrance exam.

Though CAT is the most popular MBA entrance exam, there are some other exams conducted too. CAT or the Common Admission Test is conducted by the IIMs for selecting candidates into their MBA programmes. It is an annual online test which is done by any of the IIMs following their own internal rotation process. Conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA), the MAT or the Management Aptitude Test is the next most well-known entrance exam. This determines which students will be selected for the different top level business schools and other institutes around the country. The XAT or the Xavier Admission Test is also known as the XLRI Admission Test since it is conducted by the XLRI (Xavier’s Labour Relations Institute). It selects students for admission into Xavier’s Management Institutes and other business schools all over the country.

Preparing for any of these exams must be taken up well in advance, since there is a lot to do in all cases. The MBA entrance exams mainly test four areas of a candidate: quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, English language skills and of course, general knowledge. There are many books in the market which specifically help out students preparing for MBA. Even if you consult one of these books, the main effort needs to go behind practice.

The main scoring portion of the exam is undoubtedly the quantitative aptitude one. You will need to apply your skills in mathematics and accounting, but above all be able to manage time. The most prominent difficulty is to solve all problems accurately in a very short span of time. Logical reasoning is something that people are usually gifted with. Nevertheless, it can be sharpened to a great deal by consistent practice.

Similarly, English grammar also improves with practice. At home, you can try out rewriting paragraphs from books, newspapers, etc. This will improve your stock of words. The best way to improve you general knowledge is to read a lot! Go through newspapers every day. Read practically anything and everything. Watch documentary films, talk shows. For further assistance, refer to books specifically meant for this section of the exam.

In the ultimate analysis, the main focus of an MBA entrance exam candidate should be to be able to answer correctly and confidently in as less time as possible.
