Repo (Repurchase) Rate

Repo rate is the rate at which banks borrow funds from the RBI to meet the gap between the demand they are facing for money (loans) and how much they have on hand to lend.

If the RBI wants to make it more expensive for the banks to borrow money, it increases the repo rate; similarly, if it wants to make it cheaper for banks to borrow money, it reduces the repo rate.

Reverse Repo Rate

This is the exact opposite of repo rate.

The rate at which RBI borrows money from the banks (or banks lend money to the RBI) is termed the reverse repo rate. The RBI uses this tool when it feels there is too much money floating in the banking system

If the reverse repo rate is increased, it means the RBI will borrow money from the bank and offer them a lucrative rate of interest. As a result, banks would prefer to keep their money with the RBI (which is absolutely risk free) instead of lending it out (this option comes with a certain amount of risk)

Consequently, banks would have lesser funds to lend to their customers. This helps stem the flow of excess money into the economy

Reverse repo rate signifies the rate at which the central bank absorbs liquidity from the banks, while repo signifies the rate at which liquidity is injected.

Bank Rate

This is the rate at which RBI lends money to other banks (or financial institutions .

The bank rate signals the central bank’s long-term outlook on interest rates. If the bank rate moves up, long-term interest rates also tend to move up, and vice-versa.

Banks make a profit by borrowing at a lower rate and lending the same funds at a higher rate of interest. If the RBI hikes the bank rate (this is currently 6 per cent), the interest that a bank pays for borrowing money (banks borrow money either from each other or from the RBI) increases. It, in turn, hikes its own lending rates to ensure it continues to make a profit.

Call Rate

Call rate is the interest rate paid by the banks for lending and borrowing for daily fund requirement. Si nce banks need funds on a daily basis, they lend to and borrow from other banks according to their daily or short-term requirements on a regular basis.

CRR

Also called the cash reserve ratio, refers to a portion of deposits (as cash) which banks have to keep/maintain with the RBI. This serves two purposes. It ensures that a portion of bank deposits is totally risk-free and secondly it enables that RBI control liquidity in the system, and thereby, inflation by tying their hands in lending money

SLR

Besides the CRR, banks are required to invest a portion of their deposits in government securities as a part of their statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) requirements. What SLR does is again restrict the bank’s leverage in pumping more money into the economy.

Note: I didn’t know about SLR and Call Rate. Thanks to IASMentor for this information.Similar Posts:

Some people will find it old news but those who are not avidly following the business news would find it beneficial. To know more about Subbarao, click on the image of D. Subbarao. Even wikipedia hasn’t updated the pic of Subbarao. I got his image from hindu’s site. By the way, D stands for Duvvuri.

Though after the fall of major investment banking firms such as Lehmann Brothers, Meryll Lynch etc US govt has alloted the bailout of $700 billion dollars (65% of Indian GDP or 103 times the GDP of Namibia), still the crisis hasn’t reached to its peak stage. BTW, my main motive is that you should be aware of this topic in detail as it will definitely gonna be a very hot topic of GD panelist.

I am not writing myself on it, rather I am giving you the link to read more because its better you read that is coming directly from experts. Click the undermentioned link.

Subprime mortgage crisis

Here’s a brief description of

THE GREAT DEPRESSION
The worldwide economic downturn that began in 1929 and lasted till the late 1930’s. It was the most
severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized economies of the West, which brought about
drastic changes in economic institutions, macroeconomic policies, and economic theory. The depression
started in the United States, but caused drastic decline in output, severe unemployment, and acute deflation in almost every country of the world. The social and cultural effects of the downturn were no
less staggering, especially in the United States, where the harshest effects of the depression were felt
after the Civil War.
The worst hit were the United States and Europe while milder impacts of the depression were felt in
Asia, especially Japan and the South Americas.
The worst depression faced by the World economy was a consequence of decline in consumer demand,
financial panic, and misguided government policies that caused economic output to fall in the United
States. The gold standard, which was used to fix currency exchange rates between the countries,
played a key role in transmitting the economic downturn to countries other than the United States. The
recovery from the Great Depression was spurred largely by the abandonment of the gold standard and
the ensuing monetary expansion. The economic impact of the Great Depression was enormous, including
both extreme human suffering and profound changes in economic policy .

Read both of them carefully and analyse the difference.Similar Posts:

The most important event of ancient Indian history was the development of Indus Valley Civilization.
This Civilization prospered on the Banks of river Indus. It extended from Jammu in the North to
Ahmednagar in the South, and covered various regions of Gujarat. The main sites which have
been found in the excavation are:
• Kalibangan in Rajasthan
• Lothal in Gujarat
• Banwali in Haryana and
• Ropar in Punjab.
The Indus Valley Civilization existed between 2350 BC and 1750 BC. The main cities associated
with the civilization were Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro and Lothal. The main feature of this
civilization was Town Planning. They had great buildings, well-planned roads, cities and drainage
systems. Trade and agriculture were the main sources of livelihood for the people. People of the
Indus Valley were the first to produce cotton. Mother Goddess was the most important deity of
worship.

We all do read newpapers daily, so we have a decent amount of Business Awareness; afterall we are MBA aspirants. But what we don’t do on our own is search and read the general awareness material. In order to make you more aware about some of general topics of GK, I am starting a general awareness campaign in which I will be sharing a small topic daily. What you need is to give your 10 min and read it. It will definitely be helpful.

I will start with History, the weakest section of most MBA aspirants:

ANCIENT INDIA

1. Stone Age

a) Paleolithic Age – This period was essentially the stage of hunters and food gatherers. They
used crude tools made of flakes. They had no knowledge of cultivation and house building.
Goat, sheep & other cattle were used. They lived on roots & fruits. By the end of the Paleolithic
Age, the flint industry came up. The important development of this age was the emergence of
Homo-Sapiens.
b) Mesolithic Age – This age was the transition between the Paleolithic & the Neolithic Ages.
Mesolithic people lived on hunting, fishing & food gathering. At a later stage, they domesticated
animals. They used microlith – a small raw-stone tool.
c) Neolithic Age – These people used tools & implements of polished stone. They particularly used stone
axes. Parashurama became an important axe-wielding hero. Dwelling pits, ceramics, a variety of stone
