Today, one of our reader shared one of the application she is using for improving her vocab skills, and she wanted me to share the app with you guys. To cut the crap short, this application is for iOS users. If you don’t know then, iOS is an operating system on which iPod, iPhone, and iPad works. The app is “Power Vocab“.
PowerVocab is an intuitive application for iOS devices which personalizes the English vocabulary learning for GRE, GMAT or SAT exams and personal improvement. The new approach to studying foreign languages realized in this application employs the latest techniques based on the research from MIT Computer Science and Web Semantics Lab.

With PowerVocab you do not have to plan your English learning approach. It completely controls the learning environment. All you need to do is interact. The more you practice, the more it learns about you and figures out English vocabulary words that are difficult to you.

New placement standards prepared by IIM-A will be having realistic placements figure..

Don’t be tempt by carore plus salary offered by MBA institutes. IIM-A announces to use new standard to calculate their placement figures and other institute can also follow the league to use new system to sum up their pay-package offer. This movement can reduce their average placements figure up to 30% but it will be fairer to students as genuine pictures of figure will be depicted.

The placement standards prepared by IIMA will consider following while calculating their placements figure:

1. Removal of performance-linked compensation like variable pay and annual bonus.

2. Removal of fringe benefits like employee stock options and club memberships. while reporting final salaries.

3. Foreign salary packages will be calculated by using the scale of purchasing power parity instead of the currency exchange rates.

The areas that will be calculated for deriving salary figures will include

1. Basic salary

2. Additional guaranteed cash components (HRA, travel allowance, medical allowance, leave allowance, entertainment allowance, etc)

3. And one-time cash benefits during joining (joining bonus, relocation bonus, loan repayment).

Dear Student,

At this juncture, we wish to CONGRATULATE those who have already got calls and we also wish to take you ahead to the second level of the process of getting into your dream B-Schools. Yes, you are thinking right. We are talking of Group discussion and Personal Interview preparation.

Let me give you a glimpse of ‘What does a GD and a PI check you on’? Answer is straight and simple. Written exam has checked you on your aptitude. Now is the time when you should be checked on your attitude: attitude towards life, attitude towards your career and attitude towards the society as a whole.

Attitude makes your overall persona. How you carry yourself? How you present yourself, especially in a formal group? How you know your own self – Your strengths and weaknesses, your goals, your ambitions, your dreams? How much of the world around you, you know? Do you mean everything you have written in your biodata and/or the IIFT form, for e.g. These are a few things to begin with, which are part of your persona.

Persona is something which cannot be developed or changed in 2 to 3 weeks time (That’s the time you typically get between your calls and actual GD-PI). I am sure, you all with agree with me on this. And therefore, we have specially designed a 2 months course for group discussion and personal interview training. Our GD-PI module answers all the questions above mentioned and many more.

Let me, in short, run through what our GD-PI program is. It’s actually a series of events. It includes close to 40 hours of classroom training and unlimited number of hours of off-the-class training. I can share with you what is/are covered in in-the-class training. There are minimum of 2 Group discussion orientation lectures and similarly 2 Personal interview orientation lectures. There will be 1 session on Essay writing, specially meant for XAT but not just for XAT. There will be 1 psychometric test session, 1 MET(Mica entrance Test – a test of your creative skills). Most importantly there will be minimum of 12 Group discussions and minimum of 2 PIs(Personal Interview) for all. NOTE that you can have as many PIs as you want, just that you need to bring as many different calls from B-schools as is the number of PIs you want.

In addition, you will have a series of GK Lectures specially focusing the content you may require in a GD or in an interview.

In addition, you will have a mentor allotted to you, who is usually an industry expert. These mentors are our alumni from IIMs, XLRI, FMS, IIFT, MDI, S P Jain and what not.

If I talk of off-the-class sessions, I know I will not be able to do justice with them, in words. To tell you a little, you will have a ZION Ghost behind you almost all the time. We will be discussing and charting out answers to the questions ‘Where do you see yourself 5 years down the line’, ‘Why do you want to do MBA’, ‘If you don’t get selected this year, what should you be doing’ etc etc etc. I hope you have understood that I am talking of the typical cliché questions you may face in real PIs. I hope you will agree with me that answer to these questions are highly personalized and many times you don’t even want them to be shared with other students in class. And so all such sessions are a part of off-the-class training. And so these sessions usually happens over a cup of Tea or coffee. You know ‘a lot can happen over a coffee’ – Café Coffee day. Ohh am I marketing CCD or Barista here!! Never mind.

More importantly, unlike other CAT training institutes, we have very limited seats in GD-PI training module. GD-PI module is so much student-centric that the plethora of Faculty members which we have, that also turns out to be too little. And we specifically do not believe in treating a patient who requires special attention in the same way a patient of cough-cold or viral well be treated. There has to be special treatment of those who have got calls from premiere B-schools or the B-school of his/her choice.

IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Raipur and IIM Trichy are planning to conduct joint process for selection

The four new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur and Trichy have a surprise in store for those who belled the CAT this year. They are working on what could be the next big thing among IIMs. The newly minted institutions are mulling a plan to have their own admission process and even hold joint interviews and group discussions to cherrypick candidates for this academic year. Currently, all IIMs individually send out call letters for interviews and group discussions.

“This coming together will greatly ease the stress of having to hop from one interview to another. We don’t want leftover candidates from the older IIMs. IIM-Trichy will have its own identity and admission process. The directors of all new IIMs will meet soon to decide on holding joint interviews and using those scores for admissions,” IIM-Trichy Director Prafulla Agnihotri told TOI. “There is great synergy when the IIMs come together. We have been talking about it (holding joint interviews and GD); all we need to do now is to sit down and chalk it out,” P. Rameshan, Director, IIM Rohtak told TOI. Even though the idea of joint interviews and GDs is not entirely new, the older IIMs, especially at Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, have rejected it for the sake of autonomy.

Over 186,000 candidates appeared for CAT 2010 held between October 27 and November 24, across 20 testing days. The CAT score is one of the inputs used by IIMs in admitting students to its flagship two-year postgraduate programme.

IIM-K relaxed its admission rules this year to get more girls

IIM Kozhikode director Debashis Chatterjee who believes that consistency in academic performance is more important than CAT scores in short-listing candidates. XAT 2011 Cut-Offs, Analysis, Answer key

I know you guys are waiting for the cut-offs of XAT 2011. Here’s the quick review:

In simple words : “Hosh udd gaye” One of the toughest XAT exams till date. Quant of XAT 2011 will give even our Quant Gurus a tough time. Verbal was ok. Most scoring was DI section. The one who had picked quant section earlier must had a taken a good amount of time.

Right strategy would be to take up DI first, Quant second and Verbal in the last. Institutes and Gurus are predicting that overall cut off of XAT 2011 will drop this year as compare to last one. But stay tuned to detailed analysis.

Analysis by different institutes:

IMS:

XAT 2011 came up with a number of surprises. The break of questions: 34 questions in Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, 24questions on Analytical Reasoning & Decision Making and 43 questions in Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability. Moreover, this time all the questions carried variable weightage in the range of 1 mark to 5 marks and the marks for each question was mentioned beside the question. Therefore, the entire paper was a test of your ability to select the questions judiciously. The Quantitative Ability questions were difficult, whereas the Data Interpretation questions were doable. The weightage given to questions on decision-making was higher. The Verbal Ability section was also on the difficult side, though question types were similar to last year. After two years, poetry based question has made a comeback in XAT. The essay topic was also presented in a different manner this year – an argument was given and one had to present a judgement on the argument along with justifications and examples in 250 words. Overall, it was a difficult and tricky paper.

Supporting Sentences: they expand the main idea expressed in the topic sentence- Say it
Concluding Sentence: rounding off what has been said or a logical conclusion of the idea in the topic sentence- Say it again!!!

Precautions while writing XAT essay?

Follow a flow of paragraphs
Always let the first paragraph be an introduction to the subject matter
Expansion/ support/ refutation of the idea must follow in subsequent paragraphs
The last paragraph must have a conclusion of the main idea
There could be two forms of writing- Deductive and Inductive
You should have good knowledge of the topic to write about
Read the directions carefully
Recognize action words- discuss, evaluate, argue, comment etc.
Focus on the issue rather than peripheries
Choose words with precise meanings; avoid ambiguity
Do not use Jargon
Do not use Slang
Do not use Cliché
Do not use Abbreviations
Do not use Quotations without acknowledgments
Make tentative statements; avoid definitive statements- it leaves a scope for further discussion

SNAP 2010 pattern was similar to last year paper. There were 150 questions divided in four sections. Each question was having four options & 1/4th negative marking for any wrong attempts. Difficulty level was moderate.Due to absence of sectional cut off overall cut off for SIBM & SCMHRD will be on higher compare to last years.

According to MBAtutes cut off should be 110+ for SIBM and 105+ for SCMHRD.

XAT which is most admired exam after CAT in INDIA for admission in B-school is just 15 days away. Before making any strategy to fight the XAT-battle, go through previous year XAT trend.

XAT 2011 will be conducted on 2nd January 2011 in the following 33 cities; Test Timings: 10.30 am to 01:00 pm

Going by XAT pattern from XAT -2006 to XAT-2010 we can make out that XAT has reduced number of Questions from 127 in XAT 2006 to 101 in XAT 2010. Talking about difficulty level it has been maintained more or less same over the last five years.

Most relaxing part is that negative marking which was as high as 1/2 or 1/3rd in XAT-2006 to XAT-2009 had been reduced to 1/4th for first five incorrect answer then 1/5th for each incorrect answer thereafter in XAT-2010.

Give emphasis to accuracy
FMS is known for having long essays in its Vocabulary section. Hence, a fast reading speed will help you score well in this section

Independent agency to conduct CAT

THE Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are now working towards creating an independent agency to conduct Common Admission Test (CAT). So far the CAT has been conducted by the IIMs and each year one IIM take charge of the tests. The IIMs are also looking at taking the competitive exam to international students as well.
CAT 2010, the entrance test for admission to seven Indian Institutes of Management and 100-odd other B-schools across the country, has been conducted by IIM, Lucknow. Post success of CAT, director of IIM, Lucknow, Devi Singh said, “Eventually CAT should be a global offering and should be web based like the GRE or GMAT. We are working on the process to finally create CAT as an independent system where a team of professionals would manage the test. A committee under professor Pankaj Chandra, director IIM, Bangalore is working on it and some progress has been made. It can take six to 12 months.’’
On the immediate changes one can see in CAT 2011, convener of CAT 2010, Himanshu Rai of IIM, Lucknow said,“Two things we are definitely going to improve on in CAT 2011 is the sale of vouchers. We will make the sale online wherein candidates can purchase it using credit, debit cards and internet banking. Another change is substantially reducing the 90-minute waiting time as students have complained about the long waiting right from entering the centre and sitting on their computers before actually taking the test.’’
On dissociating CAT from the IIMs and making it a globally recognised competitive exam for admission to B-schools, Singh said that the time has come to make it an independent identity as the number of IIMs is also increasing. “Some B-schools in France are already accepting CAT scores. So the acceptance is there, just that we need to take it offshore. Moreover, we have seven IIMs and six more are coming up making it 13. There will be other areas where IIMs would need to coordinate among themselves. So it is better we let the CAT be managed by a dedicated group of professionals whose focus would be exclusively on CAT,’’ he explained.
A total of 2,04,267 students registered for CAT 2010 of which over 99%of the candidates were tested. The exam was conducted over a period of 20 days from October 24, across 33 cities involving 78 test centres and 246 laboratories and 9,139 computers. Delhi had the highest number of registration with 20,341 candidates followed by Bangalore with 18,837 candidates.
The unwarranted experience of CAT 2009 seems to have been buried as so far CAT 2010 was completed without any glitches. On CAT 2010, Rai said, “We have learnt our lessons from 2009 and this year we ensured a thorough site readiness, improved service to candidates and overall enhancement of quality. We are certainly going to analyse our experience this year and concerns and areas that need to be addressed would be addressed.”
The number of CAT aspirants has seen a dip for the second consecutive year. Compared to 2008, the number of aspirants came down by over 70,000 in 2010. According to Singh, the dip is a global trend. “The trend of pursuing an MBA is going down globally. Not that candidates have lost interest in IIMs, but earlier even students who did not aspire to go to the IIMs used to take the test,’’ added Singh.

The day TOI crest edition was launched in the market (may be in September), I was in search of it. I got my first copy of Crest Edition on its 5th edition when my ‘Paper-walah’ got me the Saturday weekly magazine on Tuesday. Well the next day I searched on internet (after-all I am a netizen ) about TOI Crest Edition so that I can read it online, but all in vain. Even today some people find it difficult to get it.

Many of you come to this site as you won’t be able to see your result as the server of CATiim is not responding. Even when I tried to ping their server, it was giving a “Request Timed Out”. So there nothing to worry though as “Sabra Ka Phal Meetha hi Hota hai”. Just keep trying……

I just don’t understand why the hell CAT is taking so many chances on their paper-taking and result-declaring quality. There are so many mouths in the industry which are talking about the quality of CAT 2009. First there was the exam server failure, and now the server with result page. Where the hell the money spent by the students went when it ain’t invested in the right technology??? Well lets not go into the debate where our money went as right now we are anxious (not curious) about our result. Pagalguy has launched its B-School Ranking 2010. I went through the Rankings and the methodology of calculating the rank of the B-Schools.

Salient features of the PaGaLGuY B-school Rankings, 2010

Total number of valid respondents polled (sample size): 9,576

Total number of b-schools in the initial list: 184
Total number of b-schools in the final rankings: 92
Of which Nationally Aspired-to b-schools: 55*

And Regionally Aspired-to b-schools: 37
(5 from Jaipur
14 from Mumbai
10 from Hyderabad
8 from Chennai)

2 Colleges got black-listed from the Ranking: Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur and International Management Institute, Delhi

Quite different from last year’s Rankings - New looks, More Colleges, Regional Rankings, New options of Ranking. Well I found some good points and some not-so-good points in this year’s PG B-School Ranking , and I have jotted them down to share it with you guys.

Good Points:

1) It’s all about Looks: Decent looking Blue theme is used in user interface and the speed of the Javascript used is also good. Full points to them. Here is the screen-shot:

2) Awesome UI: Whole user interface is very friendly and have provided some salient features like

Filtering of colleges according to the score they accept.
Link of College website on hovering through the college name in the list.
Rankings on different criterion like: Freshers, Work Ex, Women,Alumni, Aspirants, MBA Students.

3) Full Transparency: Whole methodology of calculating the Rankings is published. Also different opinions has been published regarding the rankings.

4) Comparitoption: the ‘Compare B-School‘ section which helps you compare different colleges is seriously very solid. Saves lot of time in deciding which gd/pi to attend in case of clashes …just kidding. Clashes are solved by re-arranging instead of dropping one option.

5) Quant-Savvy Ranking: All kind of Statistics/Mathematics is used in calculating this ranking. According to Apurv, the ranking was put to the test of Recursive Induction (I forgot when did I hear this term last time, well Apurv has tried to explain it here) in order to maintain the authenticity of the Rankings.

6) New Ivy Leagues : Last but not the least PG has for the first time introduced the Regional Rankings (R.R) this year. They have included those colleges which have only regional reach. 4 Regions – Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mumbai have been included in R.R.

Not-So-Good Points:

1) Only 4 regions are covered in Regional Rankings. I don’t know the reason behind this but more regions would have made the Rankings more worthy.

2) Regional Colleges of Delhi (Capital of India) is ignored. Still I don’t have any clue. Delhi guys don’t you want to know the rankings of the regional colleges in Delhi? or everyone is eying only IIFT, IMT, MDI etc…

Few Nitty-Gritties:

1) If you will go to the ‘Compare B-Schools’ section and you don’t know the name of the college then you have to ‘double click‘ inside the B-School-search-box so that you can select your college directly from the B-School list. Here is the screen shot.

2) Mouse Over the B-School Name in the list in order to know more about its ranking. A pop-up will appear consisting its different ranks, website link of the college, and the discussion thread related to that college in PG Forum.

Yesterday Vaibhav told me that mbatutes is giving a virus alert on visiting. I was shocked by knowing this and started finding the issue with mbatutes. After doing some thorough research I found that some malware got loaded to my server through my laptop. Actually I don’t use the antivirus as I think antivirus creates more problem than solving them. Well I have sorted the issue and malware is been removed and you will not get the virus warning anymore.

Pagalguy has Launched Weekly Comical Strip

Pagalguy has again come up with a new concept and that is giving the insight of B-School life. And to do this they have chosen a very creative way of making a weekly comical strip. After watching the strip the first thing which came to my mind was Savita , but this is somewhat different from that , though, it has all the capabilities of taking you to the stage of Orga**. Well coming back to “Mind your business, Anna” – the name of their first comical strip. I find it lot more genuine and fun to read.

FMS Cut-Offs & Analysis

Dear students,

Are you all hale & hearty? This is the question I am asking you why because I have felt yesterday the paper which I gave was very easy & you all must have done well. This was last paper of top 10 B schools. After that we have few papers which are good to give but don’t satisfy insatiable appetite of every heart. Tell me are you not happy this year for such logical & somewhat easy papers. At least I am because I have found that how working round the year for yourself can make you right candidate for management exams. I am going to share in each section what I have got from day to day life & how my common sense has helped me in scoring well some of the sections. Three Idiots has showed us path but the onus is on us that how are we going to make it. At least this year I have tried something & got some rewards. Excellence is what u all must be waiting for striving for & you will find yourself in the right shoes, if not then sorry. This time you will be lucky to get the calls but in latter part somewhere you will realize that if you have paid attention in your past then you would have been different. SO Let’s dissect every section one by one.

Reading Section: Verbose

Oh my my dear, never expected this section such like one. When I came to section & started scanning which passage to pick. I made me nervous & frightened. Which passage I am going to pick first passage which is of 5 pages with 24 questions or the second passage which is on philosophy & the questions of which are difficult o answer. I crossed my fingers & used my golden strategy which helped me always in difficult times. Yes I scanned for the questions which were fact based. They don’t need passage reading because if you have sound knowledge of the subject, then you can go with options. I found five questions in the reading section. You all know I was surprised that all got correct. Then I picked the shortest RC which was philosophy based & attempted all the questions. When I came out I got feedback from my colleagues that the longest passage with 24 Q was comparably not so difficult to crack. Even I attempted some Q after reading some part of passage. I have found that I must have gone for that. SO MBA TUTES is expecting

CUT OFF: 24 —- 28 Marks (50 percentile) Good Attempts – 15 – 17Q.

Logical Reasoning – Easiest of All

Truly I admire the skills of FMS guys, how can they set such an easy paper. You may start from any corner & you will be awarded with score for that question. We have plenty of sets, but I want to make a point that if you would have started with the set “Financial statements of oracle” one because it consists of 6 Q’s. You would have scored directly 24 no closed to your cut off. Then we could have gone for Business school set & then six directors one set. In this way we could have managed some easy sets & somewhat good score. So friends are you repenting that why u have done not good. No issues try to strive for excellence & rewards will be yours. So MBA TUTES is expecting

Cut Off: 35 —- 40 Marks (50 Percentile)

Good Attempt: 20–24 Q

Verbal Section: Excellence

In this section form last year I was not preparing anything, but you all know why I have done well in this section. One reason was striving for excellence another hunger for knowledge. I was able to complete this section in 15 mins & with 30 Q’s. Last year this section hackneyed my speed & due to this section I wasn’t able to get calls. This year everything got swapped because only one reason & you all know that. I know every question of vocabulary & every question Greek, French etc. One question I want to discuss that form where our calendar has been derived. If you all are thinking that I am going to tell u answer for that, I am sorry because I got ans for that Q in one of my seminar which I used to attend on every Tuesday. Yesterday I realized everything what you do in life has meaning & if you lie with receptor attitude then you progress by leaps & bounds. So MBA TUTES is

Cut Off: 30—-35 Mark (50 Percentile)

Good Attempt: 22 — 25 Q.

Quant: Favorite of few but nightmare of Max

This year FMS has given us “chance PE dance”, how? Ask yourself because there were at least 10 to 12 sitter questions. If you not identified them then nobody can help you. They were helping you to clear your cut off this section and help you to get more reward in less time. Then you can go out hunt for other questions which can help you to maximize your score. So questions from the topic like race, log, algebra & surds were extremely easy. Last year question were lengthy & somewhat typical but this year they were easy so cut off is going to move up. So MBA TUTES is

Cut Off: 30 —35 Marks (50 percentile)

Good Attempt: 20-23 Q.

So Over All CUT OFF

MBA: 285 —292 Marks. For General

MBA (MS): 281—-274 Marks. For General

XAT 2010 Cut-Offs and Analysis

Today after giving major exam in the league, I felt a lot released. Tell me one thing now we all are at the end of MBA FAIR for this year. So you all guys must have learnt something. If not then don’t worry because life is very long. We all expecting this paper to go in the same rhythm like all other management exams, easy & speed game. XAT has proved that this paper belongs to class. When I gave this exam last year, I wasn’t able to class it apart. This year I recognize that this is the exam which needs very less preparation that too kind of Coaching institutes provide. It checks you on entrepreneur skills and thought process which you have developed in last couple of years. So tell me which coaching institute has taught you all those skills. It doesn’t matter if you would have run after knowledge; you must have acquired those skills which this paper was checking us on. So friends lesson for 2010 run after knowledge and try to be honest to you which was even taught in “3 IDIOTS”.

So Lets dissect section by section:

1) Verbal Ability & Logical reasoning : Dare to Think Beyond

Before analyzing this section have you asked yourself why we always have to do much in this section to get closed to cut off? I tell you reason because we had never developed those skills which this section checks us on. Had we ever use dictionary to find out the meaning of word while reading newspaper. We just pass through. Do we ever counteract to lines which we read anywhere. How can we develop foresight? That is what, so today this section has no typical RC’s but small case lets. Which short to read but difficult to interpret if you don’t have “Hawk’s EYE”. There were vocab questions & FIJ’s & logical arrangement of sentences which made the section easy as compared to last year. So MBA TUTES is

Expecting cut off: 11 —- 13 Marks. GOOD ATTEMPT: 20 — 22 Q

2) Analytical reasoning & Logical reasoning: Don’t be Stupid Be an Idiot.

This year this section surprised me. This section is favorite to most of my students. Bad news is that this year cut off is going to be low. Why asked yourself three major case studies in which every answer is right according to your perspective. According to management rules only one answer is right. If you are good in this you will get reward otherwise you have to pay penalty. Other sets like crossword which had made hell out of my students. Sets on seven puppies were easy and was must attempt. Expecting Cut Off: 7—-8 Marks. Good Attempt: 13 — 15Q

3) Data Interpretation & Quantitative Ability: So Jaa Gabar AA Jayega

What you people dreamt of that Quant is always tough. No dear this year they have reversed the sections in terms of difficulty. Yes, they made this section easy compared to last year because there were so many sitters for ex Q from No system Let X be four digits no one question. We have 6 to 7 sitters due to which cut off are going to move up. For data interpretation I have two words “Intensive Calculation”. Which hampered speed of many students if they have indulged themselves? So go for sitters if you get time then go for DI. So MBA TUTES is

Expecting Cut Off: 9—–11 Marks. Good Attempt: 15—-18Q’s.

Dear students,

What we said in our first article when heat was on. Irma brought speed and attitude & it affected Snap cut offs. See u people can’t expect that this year cut offs going to remain same or going to move down. One of the reasons was momentum which was brought by other exams like IRMA, IIFT & CAT. All were easy and the cut off moved by some no’s.

So what do you all expect are u going to party this new year by expecting same cut offs like previous year. If that so please shun off your plans or believe us, because what we say it is according to a survey which is done by team.

So Lets Dissect the analysis section-wise:

My favorite section General Awareness:

Wov we expect at least we must know few questions, but we knew few questions only. I found this sections very surprising one. After studying a lot I found nothing expected. Really this section was nightmare to all. They checked us on variety how exposed we are to knowledge. Yes that’s why this year the cut offs going to be low. What Mba tuttes expect cut off going to be for this section is:

Expected cut off: – 5 – 8 Marks.

Easiest Section of the Day: Verbal

Don’t worry to whom reading comprehensions were road blocks, they male through with smiles. I think this year section was very easy, in 20 min I was able to manage 36 Q’s out of 40 Q’s. If this was the situation then the cut off going to be shoot this year for this section. So if were able to score well in this section then party tonight otherwise start preparing well for other exams & that too verbal section.
Expected Cut off: 18 – 20 Marks.

Speed breaker Section: Quant

This year section was easy, but you have to adopt strategy to avoid road blocks which can hamper your speed. So if we would have picked the 3 Q’s On table 5 Q’s on pie chart & 15 Q from various Q’s then we would be able to manage this section. So cut off is going to be little high form last year cut off. So according to us
Expected cut off: 14 – 17 Marks.

Logical Section + Scoring Section: AR/LR

This is section where you get reward; we do single Q & gets 2 points. That’s why students who thinks they have logical bent of mind; they try to bank upon this section.

Really this year section was relatively easy due to which cut off going to move up because you have to just think here & there and you will be rewarded for that. Last year some Q’s were so typical if you would have gone for that then you would have dumped your whole section. So this year we were lucky in terms of those Q’s. So you pick any Q try to think and take away your reward. So According to us:
Expected Cut off: 30 – 33 Marks.

Over All Cut off:

SIBM : 85 —- 89 Marks

SCHMRD: 1) Blanket Call: 85—-89 Marks

2) Profile Call: 75—-78 Marks.

SIIB: 72—-75 Marks.

SITM: 67 —-69Marks.

‘CAT will continue to be online next year’ – IIMA Director

Approximately 7,000-8,000 candidates have not been able to take the computer-based CAT 2009 test due to snags in the Prometric-managed exam between Saturday and Monday, said Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Director Dr Samir Barua at a press conference in Ahmedabad on Monday evening. A total of 47 testing labs failed on Saturday, another 33 labs collapsed on Sunday while about 30 labs could not administer the test on Monday, he added.

Sticking to the ‘virus attack’ theory and blaming the pitfalls of using technology, Prof Barua said, “The major reason appeared to be a virus attack. All precautions had been taken for protection against virus attack, but we did not succeed in doing so at a few labs. In some of the other centers, there were hardware problems and replacement took 2 hours.”

“There are always bound to be problems in the first time such a huge exam takes place, especially if it is concerns technology. But we are working very hard to fix all the problems and accommodate all candidates,” he added.

On rescheduling, he said, “We will try to accommodate the rescheduled tests within this week as we have a few empty slots available. But if required, we will stretch the CAT for two extra days on Dec 8 and 9.” He added that the two-day extension would be avoided, as not all of the slots in this week were running on full capacity.

“When we reschedule, the students may not be able to choose a date or slot of their convenience. Their choice will thus get restricted. We’ll try to make sure that the new slots are as convenient as per their initial choice. There would not be a single candidate who will not be able to take the test. But there will be inconvenience caused. Do we recognize and empathize with student? Yes we do. But the inconvenience is a fact of life and we cannot do anything at this stage,” he said.

On some problems reported by candidates of disturbances caused by uncooperative invigilators who continued to use their mobile phones throughout the test, Prof Barua said, “We cannot be responsible if the invigilators talk on phone. The invigilators have moral responsibility too and something like this is possible even in paper based test.”

“We believe that the ambience and environment has improved considerably since today,” he said.

CAT Convenor Satish Deodhar ruled out the IIMs reverting back to the paper-based format and added that the CAT will be continue to be conducted online next year too.

“The preparation to make this online started in April 2007 but it took time to take off because of the tender process. We will continue to go in this direction and it’s been a good beginning so far. Yes, we have somewhat failed, but we are correcting those problems now,” he added.

Asked what sort of drills Prometric had conducted to prepare for the testing, Prometric Chief Operating Officer Charlie Karnan said that they had conducted mock drills at individual centers but not on a large scale. He added that 62% of affected candidates had already been rescheduled.

On problems reported by individual students of computer errors and reboots that gave some people extra time to solve problems, Prof Barua said, “If there is a genuine reason, they should report them to the center head and it would be considered. But if the students were idling their time away while the snag was being repaired then it is not the IIMs’ responsibility.”

Meanwhile, the Union Human Resources Development Ministry asked the IIMs to submit a report on the CAT failure.

CAT is out of the Bag.

Dear All.

I hope many of you have already heard a lot about CAT 2009 today in the first slot.

Let me cover it in more detail.

It was 100% as was predicted by us i.e. 60 Questions in all with 20 Ques in each of the 3 sections.

Going into details of each section:

English: There were 3 RCs with 3 Ques each. + 4 ques on Para Jumbles + 2 FIBs + 2 ques on Grammar(Inappropriate usuage) + 2 Ques on Para completion.

DI/LR: There were 4 ques on DS. + 3 ques on Logical reasoning(Arrangement type) + there were 3 sets each having 3 ques – these were on bar graphs + 3 sets with 2 ques each.

PS: First of all there were quite many ques which were repeat from previous CAT papers. There were all in all 4 ques on functions, 2 on geometry, 2 on P & C, 1 on SI/CI, 1 on TSD, 1 on Averages, 1 on Number system(finding remainder), 1 on Trigo(Height & Distances) etc. All in all it was a very easy Maths sections for most of our students.

Note that CAT doesn’t mentioned what is the marking scheme this year and whats the quantum of negative marking. Though the paper said that wrong question carries negative marks.

We expect on the basis of this test that cut offs should not be less then approx 13-15 questions in PS, about 13-15 ques in DI and about 14+ ques in English. All in all this was a speed paper and this was exactly what we predicted.

We suggest that in a paper like this one should attempt around 45 Ques with not less then 80% accuracy.

IIFT 2009 Cut-Offs & Analysis

I am sure IIFT continuing its last three years track of giving surprises has been a surprise for all of you once again, but then it was as predicted by us. With 122 questions ( 28 in Quant, 40 English, 34 in LR/DI, and 20 in GK) it almost matched our guess IIFT paper.

Talking about Cut-off the first hand feel which we got from our students is that a score of 32-35 should fetch an IIFT, Delhi call, and a score of should be good enough to fetch 28-32 IIFT,Kolkata call.

The paper like last year mentioned that there will be sectional cut-offs, We think that

Quant Sectional Cut-offs should be no higher than 5-6 marks.

DI/LR cut-off should be no higher than 5.5-6.5 marks.

GK cut-off should be no higher than 1.3-2.0 marks

English cut-off should be no less than 8 marks.

Overall – 32-35 for IIFT, Delhi; 28-32 for IIFT, Kolkata

IRMA 2009 Cut-Offs

Hey friends what a relief this year with such a bang on. What we all expect and what we got. Never mind that is what management is- what u expect u never get. Same thing Lord Krishna said in Bhagwat Gita. So friends starting of a session on high note premonition that please don’t expect anything just wait and give your 100%. So today let’s talk about what we had done in today’s paper of IRMA. Frankly today’s paper was on easier side compared to last year. Today I have found not a wink of difficulty in the paper except social & rural issues. Lets start, and analyze each section one by one.

VERBAL SECTION:

Tell me how many of you have felt if this would have been your cat paper could be great sigh of relief. Today there were 20Q of vocab that were too direct, and some were in the form of FIB’s, Paragraph completion & some were synonyms from RC. Then the reading comprehension was easy to read and comprehend which could have helped you bell 10Q’s on that. All in all Para jumbles were such a piece of cake you could have gone for around 32 to 35 Q.

Expected Cut off: – 18 – 23.

QUANT SECTION:

Actually this was not pure quant which becomes nightmare for some students. Last year quant was good but wasn’t that tough. This time you can pick any question and you will get reward for that. Starting 10 to 12 Q were just calculation based. You could have banged on them. Then you could have picked three sets on DI first on rice, wheat one, second on pie chart in which there were six villages in which total no of student from each in village were given in pie chart breakup and the no of students attending college were given in second pie chart break up & thirdly you could have attempted where no the marks were given for the different students in different year. Rest of the questions were also very easy just concept based for ex 3 Q’s on probability. Good attempt could be anything between 32 – 37 Q.

Expected Cut off: – 23 – 27.

ANALYTICAL REASONING:

This was same as last year. There was 10 Q’s based on decision making whether the candidate should be selected or not was must attempt. Then you could have gone for starting 10 to 12 Q which were one liners, for ex if kharif is rainy crop then Rabi is

What crop then odd one out. Then Sitting arrangement that too in a circular manner was doable one. Some Q’s on reasoning part for ex course action, statement & assumption probably false or true & cause and effect. In this penultimate one’s you cpould have gone for some Q’s which you found easy & you were able bell logic. They sound easy sometimes but they get wrong. Good attempt could be anything between 30 to 35 Q.

Expected Cut off: – 20 – 24.

SOCIAL & RURAL ISSUES:

If you all have studied well then this year Q were pretty easy and general. We all were able to clear cut off for this section. For example Q on Bill Gates, which organization does not belong to agri and so many. But still this section haunts many so cut off is not going to as high as other sections

Expected Cut off:- 12 – 17.

Friends this year they have played with strategy because we all know that what the sectional cut is and overall cut off. So they have gone for easy due to which sectional cut off for each will go high and overall cut off will shoot up.

Expected overall cut off: – 105 – 112.

Never expect what you expect, so chill and feel enthralled by the mood of paper. This mood will become motivation for your next exam IIFT. We will meet After IIFT exam with same kind of review.

Online CAT 2009 Official Demo Test

I don’t know how many of you have given this by now. May be I am late in giving this news so late but whatever it may be, if you are still unaware of this then here is the official CAT Demo Test for you. You just have to click the ‘click here to begin‘ button on the Prometric (Official CAT 2009 Conductor) Site. I have also shown it in the picture alongside this post. Online CAT 2009 Demo Test

This is a 15 min Demo test in which you can get to know the real User Interface of CAT 2009. On the very first note I find it very similar to GMAT test. But the major difference between CAT and GMAT is that you can review the question later in CAT, which you cannot do in GMAT. In GMAT once the question is marked, it is market but it is not so in CAT 2009. Here are some more screenshots.

Communication skills still count

By this time we have read five articles in X factor and we must have got something which can benefit us in our preparation. So what do you think that have you learned everything which is important to get into top B- schools? If yes then please forgive me there is still something left you all want to know. Friends X – Factor is on its final phase. After this you all will be getting last article, which will be based on how to improve your personality and communication skills.

One thing until now I have noticed that you all have neither asked us any queries nor gave any suggestion. Do I assume that you all have imbibed the skills which we were talking in the past? Ifyes then is the final skill which is very important for your preparation.

Lets see how, when two days back I was talking to IIM – A alumni Ritesh who had passed out in year 2008. As per normal strategy we used to question them what they think is better and what they had done different to bell CAT, but this time I conversed with him that when I used to prepare for Online CAT, my mode of strategy was something like equal time to all subjects. Suddenly he replied no Bhuvanesh you adopted approach which normal students think. My friends if you want to be in different league you have to different from others. Shiv Khera said “Winners don’t do different things they do things differently”. I was charged yes man I am going to get my next X – factor and that too one of the important which is directly related to preparation. At this moment of time students need something worthwhile to adopt. Friends he named this strategy “Linear Approach”. He told me that today also I used to teach some students & you know how I ask them to prepare. I said how I can know; you just started telling your unique strategy. He replied you have good sense of humor. Ritesh jokes apart let’s come to serious business. I ask them to become mad after one thing. I don’t ask them that give equal time like most of the coaching institutes say. For example I asked my students to give only 15 days for DI preparation. I was astonished; we give whole one year with little time on a daily basis for DI, but at the end of the day we aren’t able to get competitive scores in DI. He asked try out, I said practice 10 sets of DI for 15 days. Then you must have practiced 150 sets by that time and pick any paper for DI and check whether you are still able to clear the cut offs or not. I got his method, if you are running exhausted so much in a particular technique that even you don’t have to revise that particular technique again. Same for the Quant or Verbal section if you fear No system/Geometry practice No system/ Geometry for 5 to 10 days. Do you think practicing these topics for 5 to 10 days are you going to leave any good concept or question in the market. No simply because allotted time is more than that & you will going to achieve best state what you people can never think off. Same in the verbal if you fear Para jumbles or FIB’s then practice them for 5 to 10 days. After practicing them for couple of days you can cover at least 500 Q’s. Still you think you need more practice. Yes friends after that you also don’t need any test series also to compare yourself with others. If you think you have done your homework with honesty then you will come out with flying colors.

Friends don’t forget to use linear approach, see in 15 days we can cover 1/3rd course of CAT and only two sections to go and what do you think how much time still you need. Two months more or 3. Those have started their preparation just now, do not have to panic they have good time to bell one of the easiest exam. Hats off to Ritesh who has given good strategy to follow at the moment of heat & especially for students who are worrying so much.

So friends don’t forget to read last article for X – Factor next week which can actually topple your personality upside down & will make you worthwile to speak in front of crowd. Hi all.

I am back once again. And keeping fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong this time & I keep writing regularly, now on. Please pray to god.

Hope you understood already what I am going to talk about. We all know CAT is going to be an online exam this year. How much successful an exam it will be, I will tell you that on 8th December. Successful in terms of the smoothness in exam being conducted.

Anyways, what shall we prepare and how shall we prepare.
Let’s understand one thing; whether it be an online exam or it be a paper based exam, for sure it checks certain qualities in an examinee. These include managing time, keeping nerves cool under pressure, visualization capabilities (which are checked through a particular set of questions), reading between the lines, looking beyond the obvious, strategy formulation and using smart approaches, optimistic nature, tough mindedness etc.

And believe it or not these are the qualities which are checked and may be some more. Believe it Maths and English are just the means to achieve the end. They are not the end.

Now, Lets understand some things. When you will be writing an online exam you will not have an option of circling the relevant information in the paper, that’s one. Two, you will not be having the facility of crossing the options which you think are for sure wrong. Three, though you will be allowed to move forward and backwards(at least I feel so) still its not convenient to move forward and backwards as much as it is on a paper-therefore your strategies of doing easy first and difficult later may go for a toss. Four, in RC area you are in a habit of underlining a lot, which you will not be able to do in an online test. Etc etc.

The good part is that you will be allowed to use some plain papers as rough sheets(that’s again my thought. How many papers they will allow I will tell you on 8th December). Now here comes the rescue strategy. I suggest as soon as you have rough papers in your hand, make a chart saying question no., option 1, option 2, option 3, option 4 and option 5. Example is here:

Here showing horizontal and vertical lines is really not important till you keep everything vertically straight.

Now, assuming you have done this, u can start the test. But wait. On another sheet write RC 1. Para 1, para 2, Para 3 and so on AND RC2. Para 1, para 2, Para 3 and so on. Example:

Now you are ready to start the test.

How will you use what you have made? See, Sheet 1 will be used to cross the wrong answers whenever you are very sure of. Not just that, it will also act as a record of what’s the answer to which question (in case something goes wrong with the test and you have to restart it, god forbid). Please note I have personally used this sheet in many online tests and have monitored 1000s of my students doing same in many type of online tests including GMAT/GRE. And it reduces a lot of tension of students.

Now the second sheet. See any RC passage will have 4-8 small paragraphs. If you can write the jist of those small paragraphs in a line or less then that nothing like it. If you can’t, then I suggest write the line no. in that para which you think is the most imp. Doing only this will be a good boost up to you when you will actually start solving the questions on DI. One these pointers will help you locate where the answer is. Two they will remind you of the direction in which the RC is flowing. Three you will get a better hang of RC then what you use to get.

This much only for today.

“Practice, Practice & Practice”

Friends after a break of one week we are back with new pedagogy which can help you built that student inside you which can take you ahead in this journey which once started but never stops until you learn the art of performing like manager.

So tell me one thing what we have learned till now, is it worthwhile for MBA or not. I haven’t got the response yet. I am assuming that you all must be practicing them or trying to attain them in your attitude. If started then it’s alright because we started doing our work. Friends-lesson for this week; yesterday I gave call to one of the IIM-A student Shashank who had passed out from NSIT in 2008. He gave CAT in 2007, but wasn’t able to get calls & his percentile was around 98. This year he was able to clear all the hurdles you know why. Let’s know from the mouth of Shashank what he has done next year to be part of those lucky 1700’s. He told me that when you do something from your heart you become emotional and you forget to find your weakness. Actually I thought for a while & said in my mind yes he is right. He told me that this year I took lots of mock but I started finding those things which were always on negative part of my score. Lets think like this he took four mocks and he found that in every mock he is getting his Para jumbles wrong. So for next four days he practiced Para jumbles so much with concepts that his weakness became his strength. That became his habit for every subject like if he founds that he is not performing well in geometry then he practiced geometry so much for next couple of days that his geometry became his strength. Friends he told me that like this nothing remained his weakness. When he sat for CAT he has arrows of all type and he has no fear this time. He knew that he had practiced so much that nothing can come in his path. In the end friends he named his process SWOT:

A) S: Strength.

B) W: Weakness.

C) O: Opportunity.

D) T: Threats.

He politely told me never forget to apply SWOT in your day to day to life and you start getting your road map very clear what are your current resources which can help you moving further and what are your road blocks which can stop you moving ahead. Friends it is very difficult to apply what others say, but it is easy to learn from others experience. What they have faced has become your resource now, it actually depends on you how smartly you use manipulate things according to you. Friends same thing happens we are given case studies you know why. To help us by reading others experience. If any queries related to SWOT you are most welcome. Don’t forget to practice & practice and find your weakness and try make your weakness your best friend.

Hi Friends,

When I spoke to Rahul (IIM-B batch of 2010), he said he never was keen on doing MBA. MBA was one of the options he had kept in mind but it was not all.

He said, probably what worked for him was the attitude that his teacher (VM) inculcated in him. And this attitude was “MBA is not the end of the road’. It’s just a means to achieve the end. And end is where we (I, in my case) see ourselves some 20/30 years down the line.

He said, he wanted to do MBA only because it was like a Rajdhani train for him, that could have paced up what he wanted to do. But then MBA was not the only way. He said even if he would not have got into IIMB, then also he knew that he would have been working on the path to his ultimate goal.

When I asked him, what his ultimate goal was, he replied ‘action speaks louder then words’. He said, I don’t want to tell it now and later give you a chance to ask ‘What happened to your dream’. He said he rather want to tell it to everyone once he see some light towards the end of tunnel i.e. when he will be about to achieve his goal.

Friends, I called VM sir, immediately, after talking to this chap and was thinking that I have not got enough to right for this X factor. He told me an interesting story of a friend and batch mate of his student, IIMC batch of 2004. That fellow, called Malli first of all did not participate in campus placements at IIMC. Why, because his dream was to conquer 7 mountains of the world on 7 different days of week in 7 different months. And also to make a world record by doing so in less then 6 months. After talking to VM sir, I googled about this fellow and found that it was/is indeed true.

I could not get the contacts of this fellow Malli. But then VM sir only told me that this guy attributes his making this world record to IIMC. He says that if IIMC would not have been in his life he would not have been able to do what he did.

After reading about that guy, I was able to relate to what Rahul said ‘MBA is not the end of the road‘ and it’s just a means to achieve the end.

My opinion: One should be open to learning’s, whatever comes one’s way. Plus one should have a dream (Whether one is working on it or not, but then one should be able to see the dream daily). And then keep working towards whatever comes your way. Some day, whatever you are doing will automatically get associated with your dream.

So guys all the best. Keep doing what comes your way. Keep enjoying what you are doing. Just remember that success is standing on the path you are on. Just that some has to travel a little to get it and some has to travel a lot to get it. But those who won’t stop traveling, for sure will get it.

Friends as I have promised you that I will bring the crucial things which will help you in belling the cat and becoming good person overall.

For past one week I was thinking what to write at this crucial juncture, because still we have decent 4.5 months, which can be used to actually topple the image upside down. I have many things to tell you about CAT, but most important is the right thing at the right time. So friends after a serious struggle with my thoughts I encountered Neha Sharma who is a English teacher for MBA prep. I discussed with her recently that I have started a new series at MBA Tutes X – Factor which teach you crucial things. So I took her opinion what she thinks what is crucial at the D-day. She replied immediately “BE A GOOD SON OR GOOD DAUGHTER”. I was shocked after listening to this; I asked her again- are you sure that this is related to cat in any way. She replied again- yes dude I am not a nonplussed person. Then she introspected me by engaging me among few questions. Then I realize what she is saying is true enough to believe. You know what happened in those 5 minutes? She asked me have you ever asked your father can I help you out in any means, which can reduce your work load? or have you ever asked your mother that can I make your morning pretty? or when was the last time you have hugged your parents. These were the few questions which she asked me but they left me in a state of zero. I didn’t have the answer for any single Q. I remained quiet for a while; then she again said- yes bhuvanesh on the D – day only BLESSINGS COUNT. She told me that the whole process works like round cycle- when you are a good son or a good daughter, then you act like a perfect human being and your ambiance becomes a perfect temple of learning & there is no sign of negativity in your surrounding & your parents help you out of all the troubles. So I came to conclusion that was the reason for my last year failing results. I always believe that what you need end of the day is GOOD IQ level. So I always knew that I don’t have a problem in belling CAT, but my results proved me wrong. This thought of Neha vibrated my whole soul like a pendulum swinging without motto & took me to my past. Yes I have done everything to bell the cat, but why was I not able to part of those 1700? It is because I was not able to generate such positive energy which could change my results. I respected my parents but I was not able to become GOOD SON and that’s why I was not able to get that lucky blessings which could have helped me on the D – day when everything has gone haywire due to some unknown twists of CAT.

So friends believe me when you are a “GOOD SON OR GOOD DAUGHTER” then your surrounding generates such a positive vibrancy which keeps your heart calm & cool, and at the end of the day allows you to think from your mind wisely. Friends when your heart runs faster than normal on most important day of your life then nothing goes according to your plan. So to keep your heart filled with calmness to get X – FACTOR from your parents. Try to incorporate these changes and these can change your results. Still lot to go. First off all Kudos to Vaibhav Mittal who has given me a chance to interview his selected students by providing their mobile no’s.

Friends When I called this student studying in IIM Calcutta, I asked him various questions but I was not able to discover that unique answer which I wanted to discover. Then I started asking him that while preparation did he feel frustrated when he was not able to score good in mocks or when he was not able to crack quant questions at great speed. Then he replied yes & he narrated me one incident. Around March in the class he shouted once at one of the students who was disturbing him while solving question. Vaibhav sir saw & called him after the class & asked him why you get so much tense while studying. You must learn to enjoy your studies, but he replied that he has so many goals and ambitions & he don’t want to get distracted. Then sir replied you must go and do ART OF LIVING BASIC COURSE. That student asked continuously that sir tell me what’s it’s all about? but sir didn’t give any answer. Sir smiled do you trust me and are you ready to help me out in your preparation, then please go and do what I have asked you to do. He called his mom and asked her to get information about AOL course & luckily course was starting from next day. He joined that course which was of 6 days duration. Friends can any one imagine what happened, his life transformed. That boy became so calm and humble that one day someone hit his car from behind and he replied it’s ok. This course made him tension free and helped him to achieve some spirituality. This boy who get piqued by other’s disturbance and get himself involved in healthy discussion while making them explain that he is studying. Now he became the man of silence, it didn’t matter to him whether there is loud music playing if he want to study then nobody can stop him. In the last he told me that AOL part – 1 played major role in his life while cracking Cat because he was able keep his nerves cool and in control which helped him to take proper decisions.

So friends I was astonished by the X-Factor which I have discovered while interviewing him on mobile that keeping your nerves cool on the D – DAY is major task. He also told me whether you get any surprises or not also try to go with your proven strategy because end of the day you have chances that your strategy will mold to surprises but new strategy according to the situation will end up with nothing.

CAT 2009 will be computer based test

So it’s been finally officially declared that the CAT 2009 will be a computer based test. Right now it’s not very clear that whether it will be computer adaptive test (CAT) like GMAT in which next question will depend on your marking of the previous question i.e if you mark the previous question right then a more difficult question will come else the less difficult one or not. Also in CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) the marks to each question varies according to its difficulty.

Here is one excerpt:

“The CAT will be conducted at Prometric centers across the country. The locations of these centers will be determined only after all applications have been received. Students will get some idea about how to prepare for this year’s test when the CAT advertisements and booklets are released,” said IIM Bangalore (IIM-B) Professor Amarnath Krishnaswamy.

Find the meaning of a word without leaving the Web Page

Many a times I have seen that people especially the students who want to know the meaning of a word go to the new page and type dictionary.com/thefreedictionary.com to look up the meaning of a word. Don’t you think that leaving the page distracts your concentration? If yes then I have come up with a video tutorial which will help you in installing a plugin on your firefox browser, after which you don’t have to go to any other page or site to look for the meaning of a word. You just need to select the word and press “V”, and a new small window will appear to the right side of the browser which will give you the meaning of the word. You don’t need to worry about the source as this scripts brings the meaning from wikitionary/dictionary.com/thefreeditctionary.com. You just have to change the settings and that’s it.

So I’ll not bore you anymore by writing the tutorial in the post. You should watch the video which will better convey the message and consumes less time of yours. I hope you will find this plugin helpful in your daily surfing of internet. I will bring more such updates in future. BTW, here is the video (5 minutes)

Hello All,

How are you?

First of all I thank you all, for a great response to the last article. And special thanks to Bhuvanesh, Garima and Vipul for contributing towards helping MBA aspirants and my articles. And very special thanks to Mr.Ajay for morale boosting of all of us and his best wishes.

I am not happy, at all, from all the guys who have read the article, for I have asked in the last few lines of the article #2, to let me know how you feel after following the schedule for at least 5-7 days. NONE has so far posted any feedback on that. Shall I assume that all you guys are only interested in reading what to do and how to do and not at all interested in actually doing it. If that is true than guys all my efforts will become just the GYAN, JUST THE GYAN, and I will not be interested in writing any more in that case. Guys, as I mentioned in my post #1 that it is you, who extracts everything out of me, and not me who gives you anything/everything, you will have to start extracting before it’s too late. See, as a manager also, u have to utilize the resources which are available. Resources won’t come to you always, and tell u this is how u can utilize us (resources). Isn’t that true? If yes, then I suggest that you all start acting like managers and not as CLERKS.

Anyways, as I mentioned in the last article, I am devoting this article to Maths section of CAT.

My first question to you all is: are managers supposed to be good at Maths? Personally, I doubt. Look into the roles of Finance, Marketing, HR, IT/Systems, and Production etc managers. What has an HR manager to do of Maths except calculating salary increases? What has a marketing manager to do with Maths except analyzing the data to find out what kind of growth opportunity exists in the market? What has a Finance manager to do with Maths except thinking of ROR, ROI, WACC, and P & L.? If those are the only things required for various managers, why the hell you should study No. System, Time-work, Time-Distance, Perm-Comb, Prob, ratios, Geometry etc etc. What has geometry to do with any function of Management?

Let’s understand 1 thing simple. IIT-JEE asks for P, C, M, why, because these are the subjects which have to do something with every branch of engineering and U will study these subjects in the 1st year as well. CPMT asks P, C, Biology (Botany, Zoology), why, because these are the subject which have to do something with every branch of medicine and U will study these subjects in the 1st year of MBBS, as well. And same is true for all the entrance exams; you talk of CA foundation, Bank PO, Bank Clerical or whatever. Basically, whatever is going to be of some use to you in your future jobs is what is asked in the entrance exams. Right??

So, now the question is what’s going to be of some use as a manager to you? Is it going to be English? I am sure all of you will say, YES, for the simple reason that today business is not restricted to a particular geography or region, it’s rather cross borders and so a common language is required. Fair enough explanation of English being a part of Managerial aptitude. What else is required to be a good manager? THINK. THINK. My answer to that is COMMON SENSE, which is what is the most un-common thing these days. ‘Thanda matlab coca cola’ a simple theme developed by Coke to market their product in India. Do they use it in any other country? No. They understood one simple thing that Indians still calls a cold drink, THANDA. And they exploited this word. Isn’t it common sense? For that matter Pepsi could have been the first to think of it. Where will I invest the 500 crore profit I had in last year? Will I buy stocks, Will I put up a new plant, will I issue dividends, will I let them be idle in banks, will I buy competition (M&A) etc etc. Answer to this is, where ever I think is higher ROR for me, I will put my money there. No doubt, later I can turn out to be wrong sometimes. But then that was my perception/calculation of returns in what I invested my money. Isn’t it common sense? All the financial tools are secondary unless and until we have this basic understanding. Once we have this basic level of understanding then things like Black-Sholes model, Product Life cycle, what motivates People except money will come into picture?

So let’s go back. Should CAT be asking Maths? Answer is a plain NO. And dear friends, I after writing 13 consecutive CATs am telling you a fact that CAT DOES NOT ASKS MATHS at all. WHAT IT ASKS IS PLAIN COMMON SENSE.

Here are some examples.

Q: In rectangle ABCD, Point E and F trisects the base DC. What is ratio of Area (tri AEF) to that of rectangle? CAT 2001(if I can recall well)

Ans: How most of you will do it is: Area AEF/ Area ABCD = ½ x EF x AD / AD x DC = ½ x DC/3 x AD / AD x DC = 1/6, which is the right answer.

Now as per me that’s not Manager-Sense or common sense. How I will approach is: Diagonal AC divides rectangle into 2 equal halves. DE=EF=FC, the 3 triangles ADE, AEF and AFC have to be equal. Therefore, Triangle AEF is 1/3rd of Triangle ADC, which is half of the rectangle. So 1/3rd of half = 1/6th.

See, I have taken more words to explain, but when I am doing it in exam, I will just draw 2 lines, AE and AF and immediately mark the answer. 3 seconds job. What do u say? MANAGER’s job is to visualize. Isn’t it?

Q: In rectangle ABCD, Point E divides DC in the ratio 1:3. If area of triangle ADE is 7 sq cm, find the area of rectangle? CAT2000 (if I can recall well).
a) 28 sq cm b) 42 sq cm c) 56 sq cm d) None

Ans: How most of you will approach is: Area ADE = 7. So ½ x AD x DE = 7. So AD x DE = 14. So AD x DC/3 = 14. So AD x DC = 42. And that’s wrong.

Those of you who are cautious will not write DE = DC/3, which DE is not, rather DE = DC/4. Using that you will get the right answer which is 56 sq cm.

Anyways, this above is a Maths teacher’s approach, and not mine. My approach will be: Triangle ADE is 1/4th of Triangle ADC. So Triangle ADC = 28 and so Rectangle = 56 sq cm. And I will take 4 seconds to do it in exam.

Guys, this is how you will do, after doing the 1st question. In CAT, how actually I did was: A line drawn from E parallel to AD, say touches AB at M. Now Triangle AEM is also 7, so rectangle ADEM is 14, Which stands on 1 unit base(DE), so on 3 unit base(EC) area will be 42, so total area is 56 sq cm. Howz that??

Now, I can keep solving questions here in the same fashion. I can solve almost all the questions of every CAT in the same fashion. Guys, you may believe it or not, I take 15 odd minutes to exhaust the Maths section, typically doing things as explained above.

Now, the more important point. How am I able to do things this way? There are things which by chance, I have been doing since early childhood. I hope all of you remember some problems like A & B went to a book shop, each purchased a book worth Rs 25…………………..Where has 1 Rs.gone? Hope you are able to recollect the old problem. Typically, we after a small effort use to leave that after trying for a while. My problem was, I use to try such problems till I use to find the answer. So what’s the lesson for you? Managers are supposed to keep trying till they have the solution? Right? No, not exactly, that’s how u develops eyesight for what is missing. Once developed, that eye sight pays in long run.

Second, I solved Shakuntala Devi book, when I think, I was in 8th standard. And not like most of my students. I didn’t use to refer to solutions ever, except for the answers. Unless I had tried a question 7-10 times, I didn’t use to refer to solution. Matter of chance, I was able to solve almost 95% of the questions in those many attempts. Typically what happens with my students is, after 1 try or maximum 2, they will rush to see the answers and here u have KILLED an opportunity for ur brain to develop. What can any teacher do now?

Third, even till date, when I am not able to solve a question, I will keep thinking of it, especially while I am driving. And will you believe that formulas like ‘Product of all factors of N=a^m x b^n x c^p………..’ I have derived while driving. Hey guys, I am not suggesting that you think while driving, but then what about the time you spend in Metro or Bus, what about the time when you are waiting for ur turn a doctor’s clinic, what about the time you are waiting for a bus etc.

Fourth, I use to share the best tricks I have made with my friends. We use to debate and ended up many times in fighting and spoiling our moods. But then end of the day, we ended up making lot of shortcuts. I remember many till date, how a particular short cut was derived by us, who ended throwing full cup of tea over whom while discussing (arguing actually)? This on 1 hand helped us gaining knowledge through sharing, on other hand the tricks were memorized because of the incident.

Fifth, I use to carry a diary, full of formulae I have read in a particular class, till that date. And I use to take it out of my pocket whenever I was in bus or at doctor’s place etc.(I missed my turn at doc’s place many times, hope you won’t). This habit made me derive many formulae on my own, of which I have never ever read the proofs or derivation. Imagine if u have derived a formula yourself, can u ever forget it and the concept behind it.

Sixth, since class 9th, I have habit of writing every single penny I have spent. What I use to do was, in morning while getting out of home, I use to count the money I am carrying. And when I was back home, I use to count it again. The difference, u know, is what I have spent. I use to think where have I spent, and I use to think till I can figure out every Rs.1 spent. This made my BODMAS solid, and I bet even today you can’t beat me in calculation, calculator allowed for you, not for me. Understand this guys, CAT won’t make you multiply 3456672 with 21344289. But then u will come across 34 x 47 type of simple calculation quite often. If you know that the answer is a little more then 1200, about 1600, that usually serves the purpose. Difficult na. No, not really, see 30 x 40 is 1200. So answer is more then 1200. Further 4 and 40 is 160 and 30 x 7 is 210. So the answer is 1200+160+210=1570. I hope that suffice to all. To those it does not, they can add 4 x 7 = 28 to 1570 to get 1598. Guys, you may not believe, when I was typing, I asked my friend who was sitting on the next table, to give me 2, two digit numbers. He gave me 34 and 47 and I immediately replied that their product is 1598. He said I am kidding and he checked and was amazed to see that it is correct. So the lesson is, when you like numbers you can be fast @ speed of light. Ok ok, speed of sound. Is that enough for CAT? I believe yes.

Lastly, I can keep giving you such tips to no end. As of now I am stopping for Ansh will say, sir no more space on mbatutes for your future articles. Lolzz… Anyways, don’t start following these tips. And say it’s too much. And be where you are. We all, including me, avoid working by saying it’s too much, just that if we start somewhere, slowly and slowly, with time, we end up doing so much that in the end we wonder if it were we only who has done so much. I, in my research (which is going on) these days, counted the pages which I have studied (of various case studies) in past 10 months and was amazed to find out that I have studied more than 12000 pages. I am wondering that it cannot be me who has read all these cases. But then I can’t deny my hand writing on all these papers.

MIT Museum – The 150 Exhibition

A very unique way to celebrate 150th birthday (10 April, 2011) of MIT (Yes the original Messachusetts Institute of Technology). MIT Museum has started a new site where they are calling the students, alumni, faculty member or any other person related to MIT to nominate some very unique person, place, thing or idea. After this nominations they will select the top 150 unique identities of MIT and showcase them in the MIT museum.

Though 150th birthday is after two years, they have started collecting the items now. Till now there has been 123 nominations. Here is the screenshot of the nominations. To go to the site, please click the image or this link: MIT Museum Nominations.

So if you are somehow related to MIT and have something to share then go to the MIT Museum site and nominate your stuff. In my opinion this is a very creative way to commemorate the institute’s birthday. I think others too will come up with such idea. Do you want to discuss or know more about IIM k? if yes then I came across the students portal of IIM Kozhikode i.e http://iimklive.com today. You can get the real insights of IIM K more on this portal than the official site of IIMK. Though you cannot participate or see the whats going on on the students forum for IIM K students or alumni, you can participate in the mentorship forum started by IIM K students i.e Mentorship @IIM K (this is the name they have give to this new forum)

Mentorship @ IIM K started this year and currently there isn’t much topics and thread to discuss. Few topics on this forum are:

Here are some simple but enormously beneficial hints to help relax your eyes when studying or concentrating.

Light

Sunlight is the best for your eyes. When there is not enough sun-light, use comfortably bright light from electricity.

Breathing

When we concentrate, we tend to hold our breath or we stop breathing for a short period. This creates tensions in our eyes and our bodies. When you study or concentrate, make sure that your breathing is relaxed, deep, and rhythmic.

Blinking

We naturally close and open our eyes and it is called “blinking”. We tend to stop blinking when we concentrate. So make sure that you blink when you concentrate. Also occasionally, look away and blink a few times to relax your eyes.

Palming

This technique is to relax your eyes. Use your palms to cover your eyes without touching the eye lids. Make your palms round like when holding water so that you do not touch the eye lids. Your palms will touch your forehead and cheeks so that you will feel complete dark.

Hello All,

I am new to MBA tutes and before I start writing anything, let me introduce myself.

I have been training students for CAT, GMAT and other MBA entrance exams since last 13 years and till date I have trained about 20k students.

I have been associated with some of the universities in Delhi as Guest Faculty, Have also been associated with some CBSE affiliated schools for NTSE classes, have also been associated with a few B schools in Delhi as Guest Faculty and in last 13 years have been associated with alomost all the branded MBA coaching institutes for a decent number of years.

About my academic background, I am M.Sc in Maths + an MBA, currently doing research in management areas. In my days, off course, I had IIM calls, XLRI call, FMS & IIFT + a few more(I don’t remember now..).

O ya, something of your interest, I have appeared myself for last 13 CATs and have scored 99.99 percentile and ya, scored a perfect score in GMAT too, recently…

Why I am here? Interesting question…

Answer is plain vanilla. Been training students for CAT etc., I could not resist my temptation of helping students across India and not just in Delhi, When Ansh asked me to share my experiences, here…

He asked me to share my experiences of teaching students, the difficulties which students usually face when it comes to Maths(PS), English, DI, LR or it be GD-PI preparation..I thought it will be an easy job for me, but Ansh, being a DCEite could not see me happy, made my life difficult by asking me to share my personal experieces since I appear for CAT every year and in addition he asked me to share what goes in my students when they are preparing. What kind of ups and downs they go through, while preparing for CAT, not just that, what happens in those 2.5 hrs, which decides the fate of an individual…

I agree, I have a lot of experience but then I am kinda scared as to explaining everything just by typing, without speaking, without seeing a student….

Teaching in a class, I think is pretty easy job as there are so many students sitting to extract every thing from a teacher. So in a way, I don’t give anything to the class, rather students themselves take what they want, and it just comes out automatically…

Ansh said to this, that here also students are going to extract the same way, except that i won’t be able to see their faces and so will they.

So, here I am, with you all, for you all….

And here is a plan to start with…

Next Post of mine I will talk about ‘How should one prepare for CAT, in long run’. By long run I mean given a 7-10 months preparation time which is what I believe is more then sufficient to crack CAT.

Gradually I will look into How a B.A. English Hons can crack CAT or XAT Maths, How a B.E./B.tech can crack CAT/XAT English…how a person scared of water can learn swimming, ohh sorry, these are not How to swim, tips, these are How to prepare for CAT tips….

I meant that only, one who is scared of Maths, how can he/she learn Maths, same for those who are scared of English…

And trust me, Cracking CAT is a game, just a game, which you can be 100% sure of winning, if you play it with the game spirit. If you take it as an exam, for which tonnes of studies are required, then sorry guys, I won’t be much of help. Let’s play the game. Remember, game is for fun. We play it for we love it. We play it to win, we sometimes play to lose as well. So, if you love it, be ready to understand the rules of the game…

Actually it was Division level contest in which best speaker’s selected from area level were competing at division level. Speaker’s who will win today represents their club at district level in Colombo. If u think u cant speak, then u may be probably wrong, because there is somebody to help you out in this journey that is Toastmaster. ATMA 2009 Result Declared

The Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) today declared the results of the AIMS Test for Management Admissions (ATMA) 2009 examination which was held on February 8, 2009.

Approximately 21,000 management aspirants wrote this test and 132 colleges officially accept ATMA scores. There are of course Indian MBA colleges which accept ATMA results on an unofficial basis.
