Hello students and I am back again to help you with your preparation for the CAT and other MBA examinations. This time, we will focus on how to get command over this reading comprehension, and make the mark in the competition. But before we proceed with that, there are few facts, that i would like to throw some light at , so that you may know why is it so important to pay special attention to these reading comprehension part. As we all know that the verbal section in CAT or any other exam for that matter is divided into both reading comprehension and verbal ability. But over the years changes have been observed in the pattern. Nowadays the numbers of questions are much lesser than what they use to be before. As a matter of fact, CAT 2006 saw only 25 questions on verbal ability out of these only 15 were from the reading comprehension part.  Now the point of mentioning is this , that now we have to rethink our strategy according to the changing patterns plus CAT going  online this year makes the change in strategy even more than necessary. But it’s nothing to worry about if you are well prepared.

To start with RC, you should know, first of all what topics are usually covered in these exams. For instance, in CAT, usually the RC’s are made over topics like politics, genetics, psychology, economics, philosophy, arts etc. So basically the range is wide and so the range of your reading material should be as wide. Try to read as much as you can, over various topics, in short to be put forward, you should at least have a basic idea about almost every topic. Now after this, let’s focus on the real thing, in exam there would not be much time for you to read the article over and over again, and since it would be online this time, you can’t even underline the hard words etc. So the point is , keeping in the time limit in mind, you have to do it all, consciously keep this in mind when you start reading, that you will read it only twice. The first times when you are reading it, read it with the sight of an eagle, focus on each and every word very carefully, and while doing this, try to memorize the lines and hard words virtually. As in while reading through, kind of mark the word in your brain, and remember the context in which it was used. Do the same, while going through the whole passage. Now after you are done reading with the article once, have a look at the questions, and this time according to the questions read the article the second time, and now you will realise that there are many questions solved then and there only as you would remember the answers and meaning from your first reading. And as soon as you are done with this, move onto the completion of your answer.

Now this strategy would definitely work, provided you sharpen your memorizing skills as well because its online you wouldn’t be able to mark or write anything so this the last resort that you have. And like i said earlier , memorize it virtually, by this i mean, try to imprint the lines and scene in your brain. The sight memorizing is one of the methods of learning things.

Apart from this, what would majorly help you in cracking the RC successfully, i have mentioned earlier as well. Read widely , but most importantly increase your reading speed, for CAT your average speed of reading should be around 350 words per minute, but if you haven’t achieved this as yet, there is nothing to worry , there is still time and now when you read set your target. Next time whenever you decide to grab an article, set the timer in your mobile, and decides according to your own pace that in that much specific time you would read and solve questions. This will not only largely help you to know how much you need to speedup but also it would tell you where you stand. To practise this, you can take online tests on TEST MAGIC, LearnHub, WizIQ Education, TCY Online. And there are various other sites as well. While doing the routine surfing of Pagalguy I came across some tips on improving your reading speed. I want to share these tips with the readers of this blog. For all amateurs these are the best tips, at least to find the fault but all the learned people who are preparing for MBA for past one or two year will find a fault.

Tips to improve reading speed (.doc)

My take on these tips are :

1) Sight Reading: Due to sight reading sometimes we miss few words like to, for, they, a etc which are articles, prepositions and verbs. Though they are not so much important but they sometimes change the overall meaning of the sentence like

Compare Akbar with Shah Jahan (right sentence)

Compare Shah Jahan to Akbar (wrong sentence)

Though both looks similar but the preposition used here made the difference and only an avid reader can find it. Many a times RC checks you on these words and asks a question, if you are really attentive while doing the sight reading then it’s good otherwise in order to improve the speed you mark a wrong answer. So, in my opinion be careful while doing the sight reading.

2) Configuation: This is also very dangerous as once you make a habit of recognizing the words then you start focusing on first and the last alphabets of the word and read all those words incorrectly which looks similar, like

Septic and Sceptic

Stationary and Stationery

Style and Stile

Veracity and Voracity

Vain and Vein

Debutante and Debutant

Wave and Waive

And this list continues as in English Lexicon you will find lots of words which look similar but they are way apart from each other. So, again be careful while adopting this method of reading as a wrong word totally changes the meaning of the sentence.

Overall, very nice tips to follow but be precautious while blindly following them. At the end I will say this much that do give importance to speed reading but never compromise on comprehension as competitive exams will check more on your comprehension instead of speed, and this judgment of mine is based on the premise that CAT has reduced the number of questions (total 75 questions) and increased the time limit (150 minutes).
