Hello students and I am back again to help you with your preparation for the CAT and other MBA examinations. This time, we will focus on how to get command over this reading comprehension, and make the mark in the competition. But before we proceed with that, there are few facts, that i would like to throw some light at , so that you may know why is it so important to pay special attention to these reading comprehension part. As we all know that the verbal section in CAT or any other exam for that matter is divided into both reading comprehension and verbal ability. But over the years changes have been observed in the pattern. Nowadays the numbers of questions are much lesser than what they use to be before. As a matter of fact, CAT 2006 saw only 25 questions on verbal ability out of these only 15 were from the reading comprehension part. Now the point of mentioning is this , that now we have to rethink our strategy according to the changing patterns plus CAT going online this year makes the change in strategy even more than necessary. But it’s nothing to worry about if you are well prepared.

To start with RC, you should know, first of all what topics are usually covered in these exams. For instance, in CAT, usually the RC’s are made over topics like politics, genetics, psychology, economics, philosophy, arts etc. So basically the range is wide and so the range of your reading material should be as wide. Try to read as much as you can, over various topics, in short to be put forward, you should at least have a basic idea about almost every topic. Now after this, let’s focus on the real thing, in exam there would not be much time for you to read the article over and over again, and since it would be online this time, you can’t even underline the hard words etc. So the point is , keeping in the time limit in mind, you have to do it all, consciously keep this in mind when you start reading, that you will read it only twice. The first times when you are reading it, read it with the sight of an eagle, focus on each and every word very carefully, and while doing this, try to memorize the lines and hard words virtually. As in while reading through, kind of mark the word in your brain, and remember the context in which it was used. Do the same, while going through the whole passage. Now after you are done reading with the article once, have a look at the questions, and this time according to the questions read the article the second time, and now you will realise that there are many questions solved then and there only as you would remember the answers and meaning from your first reading. And as soon as you are done with this, move onto the completion of your answer.

Now this strategy would definitely work, provided you sharpen your memorizing skills as well because its online you wouldn’t be able to mark or write anything so this the last resort that you have. And like i said earlier , memorize it virtually, by this i mean, try to imprint the lines and scene in your brain. The sight memorizing is one of the methods of learning things.

Apart from this, what would majorly help you in cracking the RC successfully, i have mentioned earlier as well. Read widely , but most importantly increase your reading speed, for CAT your average speed of reading should be around 350 words per minute, but if you haven’t achieved this as yet, there is nothing to worry , there is still time and now when you read set your target. Next time whenever you decide to grab an article, set the timer in your mobile, and decides according to your own pace that in that much specific time you would read and solve questions. This will not only largely help you to know how much you need to speedup but also it would tell you where you stand. To practise this, you can take online tests on TEST MAGIC, LearnHub, WizIQ Education, TCY Online. And there are various other sites as well. Apart from preparing with the techniques that have been told keep your spirits up and give your 100 per cent. All the best.Similar Posts:

Its a renowned fact that English is a must thing to know these days, whether you are a student, businessman, housewife or even a call centre employee, it’s a necessity that you know this language. Although it’s important for one and all in these times but for the students, who prepare for various competitions and entrances it’s a requirement of an utmost importance. more than often it happens this way , that the graduates preparing for various competitions think they know English , and they are as good in it as they are in their mother tongue, because they speak English slang , while their college days all the time and here’s where they make the first mistake. The English that we speak , in our daily lives can’t even be compared to the English that is required to crack any competitive examination, like cracking for IIM’s , and other MBA entrances.

For these exams, it is very necessary that you a tight grip at vocabulary, so if you are thinking of cracking any MBA entrance examination, then you should go through this article further, this would help you improve your English only within few days that would largely help you in cracking your exam. The first thing you should start with, should be reading. All the magazines that you always put aside just after flipping through few pages and going over glossy pictures, now is the time that you do a little more than that. Read as much as you can. It can be anything of your interest, but reading randomly wouldn’t help, while reading always keep a pencil in your hand and mark the hard words that you don’t know the meaning of, and those words which you know but you find hard to recall their meaning. If you will do this continuously for few days you will find yourself with many words, out of these, interestingly you will find that many of them would be similar. Now what you are supposed to do, when you have found these similar words is, create “roots”. “Roots” will be those words which would sound kind of similar, and when you will memorise them simultaneously, it would become quite easy to recall them at the time of examination. For instance, the words “cling” and “cliff”, sound similar cliff means a high steep face of rock, while cling means to attach to, this way whenever you will come across the word cliff or cling you would automatically remember the other, hence this way you learn two words each time and recalling them becomes even easier. When we talk of reading , it’s ok for starters , who are are not use to to reading , that they pick up with anything , that they get their hands on, but for those who are seriously looking forward to crack the exam, its very necessary that they read the editorial page of the news paper. As a tip, its suggested that “THE HINDU“, by far, produces best editorial page as it consists of just information without unnecessary details. Also one should go for the “e-paper”, as its online, it now adds an edge to your preparation, because if you are use to reading on your computer screen , your reading pace would improve which would help you during your exam, this is especially important when the CAT has become online exam, and others are soon to follow the same. It is very important that you have a good reading pace, because how you perform in exam is a latter thing, first of all its important how much you attempt it, and it would be only possible when your reading pace would be good enough. For this , after you get yourself use to , to reading, you should set time limits for yourself. Set up a timer , and try to finish reading in that particular time. This will highly help you improve your reading.

The technology has made learning even more easier than ever, and students preparing for MBA should make the most out of it. Apart from reading the online newspapers, one should also use DVD’s and CD’S to improve the pronunciations and understanding of English. There are various English tests available online that keeps student updated about the status of their preparation by which they get to know where they stand. One of the sites that may prove useful for students is magportal.com. And for newspaper you can refer to nytimes.com, TOI e-paper

A lot more can be done to improve this language, besides the few tips given above, but most importantly it is necessary that you develop an interest for the language. As without interest it is almost impossible to learn anything, no matter how desperately you want to learn it.
